A Must-See Exhibition: Carrie Mae Weems at C/O Berlin

If you’re looking for something inspiring to do in Berlin, we have a great recommendation for you: Carrie Mae Weems’ The Heart of the Matter at C/O Berlin.

We visited the exhibition recently and absolutely loved it. This fascinating retrospective spans more than four decades of Weems’ artistic work and offers a wonderful opportunity to follow her development as an artist. Through photography, video and installation, she explores themes of history, identity, representation and memory.

What makes the exhibition particularly interesting is the way it connects the personal with the historical and political. Weems often uses her own life, family and experiences as a starting point, opening up much bigger questions about who gets to tell history, who gets seen and how images shape the way we remember people and places.

The exhibition also offers fascinating insights into Black history and culture in the United States. Weems explores the experiences of Black communities, particularly in the American South, as well as themes of family, faith, spirituality and resistance. Her work gives these subjects a very personal and often deeply moving perspective.

And then there are the photographs themselves. Some are intimate and quiet, others powerful and provocative. The famous Kitchen Table Series, for example, uses the artist’s own domestic life to explore love, relationships, motherhood, gender and independence. Seeing these ideas develop throughout the exhibition makes the retrospective especially rewarding.

So if you’re curious about photography, American history, Black culture, or simply want to discover something new, put this exhibition on your Berlin list. It’s thoughtful, beautiful, sometimes challenging – and definitely worth taking the time to explore.

The Heart of the Matter is currently on view at C/O Berlin.
